Urban Design and Landscape Architecture for 5 block area of downtown Tampa.
In 2001, the City of Tampa commissioned David Conner + Associates to develop a new plan for the renovation of Franklin Street Plaza in Downtown Tampa. Franklin Street had gradually become a location for closed businesses and increasing numbers of the homeless after it was closed to vehicular traffic in the 1970’s. The completed design recommended pedestrian safe zones at intersections, outdoor cafes, sculpture, and shaded seating areas. The completed project opened the road to traffic during mornings and evenings, replaced the damaged sidewalks with 12’ wide concrete walks, new tree planting and street lighting. Today Franklin Street is returning and new development is proposed.
