#NoShaveNovember

No Shave November

November has come to a close, but our beards live on!

Taylor, John, and Tony participated in this year’s #NoShaveNovember for David Conner + Associates. The goal of No-Shave November is to grow cancer awareness by embracing our hair, which many cancer patients lose, and letting it grow wild. Then, donate the money saved in razor blades to the No-Shave Organization, which uses those donations for cancer education and prevention, helping cancer patients fight the battle.

Although they achieved various degrees of beard success (sorry Taylor), they were able to save more than expected, and to make their success even better, David Conner generously doubled the amount!

For more information on No-Shave November or how you can help go to http://www.no-shave.org. And make sure you #letitgrow for cancer awareness!

UF’s Heavener Hall Approaching Completion

Cast Bronze GatewayFriday, the University of Florida will officially dedicate the new Heavener Hall building. We at David Conner + Associates (DC+A) are very proud to be a part of the Heavener Hall School of Business project  as part of the SchenkleShultz/RAMSA architectural team. Our work emphasizes the building’s important location within the Historic District of the campus. We collaborated with the architectural team and the University on the design of a new Gateway at University Avenue and 13th Street, an outdoor courtyard framed by Heavener and Bryan Hall, an outdoor dining café/courtyard entry, and all other landscape design surrounding the building. As UF’s Heavener Hall approaches completion we decided to give a little insight on the construction and our design influences.

First is our Sketchup Model of the entry gateway. Followed by the in progress photo of the gateway as of October 29th, 2014.

The seal of the University will sit in front of this cast iron, stone, and brick entrance into the University of Florida Campus.  The angular shape of the pilasters are reflecting the Heavener Hall structure as well as the historic brick and limestone buildings throughout the campus.

DC+A also took inspiration from the historic wall of University Avenue in the design for the lower walls of the entry gateway.

The inspiration for the lower walls can be seen on the historic University Avenue.

“The P.K. Yonge Developmental Research School is affiliated with the University of Florida’s College of Education. In order to align with the school’s mission and vision, P.K. Yonge embarked on a phased replacement of its existing facilities that will transform the facilities into a modern campus and a student focused 21st century learning environment.

The design of the new, three story middle–high school building creates a student-centered
learning environment that is flexible, technology-rich and provides opportunities for collaboration to occur everywhere. Each learning community includes STEM labs, open collaboration areas, learning studios, distance learning labs, teacher planning/collaboration and small group breakout spaces.

In addition to the innovative 21st century learning environment indoors, the school is situated on a site with both wooded and open terrain that provides opportunities for outdoor learning. The school has a direct connection with Tumblin Creek, which runs west to east through the campus. The design incorporates a meandering pathway and outdoor seating wall that allows students to engage with the site. The school takes advantage of
the outdoors by creating teaching opportunities through environmental classrooms, a wetlands/ stormwater education area, outdoor classrooms and a fossil dig area.”

Fletcher Avenue Under Construction

Fletcher Avenue (between Bruce B. Downs and Nebraska) is under construction and approaching completion.  Fletcher Avenue will be transformed into the county’s first Complete Street Project to significantly improve the safety of pedestrians commonly found crossing the road.

Fletcher Rendering

The design developed by David Conner + Associates will enhance public awareness of the pedestrian nature of the road, provide increased signage and mid-block crossing opportunities, and provide low maintenance high visibility plantings through the use of a very low water usage palette of plant material including Prickly Pear Cactus, Agave, Perennial Peanut and Coontie.

Fletcher Avenue

The “Gateway” feature designed by David Conner symbolizes a pedestrian crosswalk attendant with outstretched arms, calling to drivers entering the pedestrian corridor to be aware of the pedestrian nature of the road. Mid-Block crossings provide safe havens for pedestrians to safely wait for an ideal road crossing opportunity.
